abstract

the commonly used nickel-titanium (niti) archwires in orthodontic treatment are often exposed to fluoride-containing mouthwashes. the aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate and compare the corrosion resistance of three commercially available niti archwires exposed to 0.05 wt% and 0.2 wt% fluoride mouthwashes.three different types of niti archwires, 0.016″ in diameter, from dentaurum, global, and gac, and a stainless steel archwire from dentaurum were examined to assess their corrosion resistance in fusayama-meyer artificial saliva and in two other artificial saliva containing 0.05 wt% and 0.2 wt% sodium fluoride (naf). after the primary setup of wires, they were tested by potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization and corrosion potential/time analyses. their surfaces were evaluated using a scanning electronic microscope (sem).the results showed that all the wires were passive in artificial saliva. in contrast, by adding fluoride ions to the solution, the decrease in the archwires' corrosion resistance was in direct proportion to the increase in fluoride concentration.the niti wires experienced deterioration of their corrosion properties under the effect of fluoride but not as much as the stainless steel archwires.

Corrosion resistance of stainless steel, nickel-titanium, titanium molybdenum alloy, and ion-implanted titanium molybdenum alloy archwires in acidic fluoride-containing artificial saliva: An in vitro study

OBJECTIVE (1) To evaluate the corrosion resistance of four different orthodontic archwires and to determine the effect of 0.5% NaF (simulating high fluoride-containing toothpaste of about 2250 ppm) on corrosion resistance of these archwires. (2) To assess whether surface roughness (Ra) is the primary factor influencing the corrosion resistance of these archwires. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four di...

Evaluation of the Effect of an Experimental Herbal versus Fluoridated Mouthwash on Frictional Resistance and Surface Roughness between Orthodontic Brackets and Two Types of Archwire: In Vitro Study

Introduction: The present study aimed to evaluate an experimental herbal mouthwash, as compared to sodium fluoride mouthwash on the frictional resistance and surface roughness between brackets and two rectangular archwire types. Methods: A total of 60 premolar׳s brackets engaged with 0.019×0.025 archwires made of stainless steel and nickel-titanium alloys were used in this study. The samples we...

Effects of three different mouthwashes on the surface characteristics of nickel-titanium and Stainless steel archwires in orthodontics

Introduction: Patients are recommended regular using of mouthwashes to control dental caries or periodontal diseases since orthodontic treatment may have detrimental effects on the tooth structures. However, chemical agents may potentially damage metal components of orthodontic appliances. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of three mouthwashes on the surface characteristics of...

Comparison of Mechanical Properties between Different Orthodontic Stainless Steel Archwires

Introduction: The Damon system recommended the use of revolutionary, hightechnology Damon edgewise 0.019” x 0.025” orthodontic stainless steel archwires (OSSA) for major mechanics and finishing and claimed that this new archwires offer greater efficiency during orthodontic treatment. No study has been carried out to compare this relatively new archwires to other popular OSSA already in the mark...
